City-owned, regionally supported - a new arena & events centre for the Battlefords

Project Hub: Arena and Events Centre

The City of North Battleford is seeking funding for a new arena and events centre to replace the existing Access Communications Centre. This facility will be owned by the City of North Battleford and will receive support from communities across the Battlefords region.

Project Overview

The regional arena and events centre includes the following proposed specs:

  • two ice surfaces (twin pad)
  • main arena with a seating capacity of 2600
  • secondary arena with a seating capacity of 400
  • estimated total building floor size - 121,816 sq. ft.
  • accessible, multi-purpose community spaces

A map of the proposed project site is found below. This is located on municipally-owned land and is adjacent to existing municipal recreational facilities, the InnovationPlex Recreation & Cultural Centre.
The proposed site is a concept plan only and is subject to change.

Regional project
North Battleford is the hub of northwest Saskatchewan; well positioned to support a new facility serving a broad area.

Facility to be built on inclusion & accessibility
The new facility will provide an inclusive and accessible regional space for sport, culture, and community events with meaningful participation from diverse user groups, including people of different cultures and persons experiencing disabilities.

Safer communities and youth opportunities
Recreation investments and positive opportunities for youth helps build safer communities - this facility would host organized sports and encourage mentorship, youth development, and community connection, while promoting healthy lifestyles and better outcomes.

Economic development for the region
Facilities like this drive event attraction for sporting, cultural, and community initiatives which support visitor growth; during construction, more than 200 jobs will be created and more than $58 million will be spent locally.

Emergency preparedness
This facility will be a vital support space during regional/provincial emergencies in the event of evacuations or disruptions.

A project with a scope like this, with an estimated cost of $94 million, requires funding from many sources to make this facility a reality.

Capital Funding Commitments To Date

  • City of North Battleford - $15 million capital - confirmed
  • Town of Battleford - $1 million capital - resolution to commit funding has been received
  • RM of Battle River & RM of North Battleford - combined amount of just over $1 million in capital funding - resolutions to commit funding have been received
  • REC Committee fundraising group - feasibility study indicates a fundraising projection of $20 million, with a fundraising campaign to launch in the near future

The City of North Battleford will submit applications, supported by regional letters of support, to both the federal and provincial governments for capital funding contributions. Projected capital funding requests will be 1/3rd of the project costs from each level of government.
