Province pledges support for Battlefords Regional Arena & Events Centre pending federal funding approval

The City of North Battleford is pleased to share a significant update on the Battlefords Regional Arena & Events Centre, a City-owned and regionally supported facility that will strengthen recreation, sport, culture, emergency preparedness, and long-term economic opportunity across northwest Saskatchewan.

The City has submitted a $30 million application to the Federal Government through the Build Communities Strong Fund - Direct Delivery Stream, administered by Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada. Today, the Government of Saskatchewan confirmed that, if the application is approved, the Province will match the federal contribution dollar for dollar. The remaining local share for the estimated $96 million project is approximately $36 million.

"This is a defining moment for the Battlefords. Our regional partners and communities have stepped forward, and our local fundraising campaign is well underway. Today marks a significant milestone, and we sincerely thank the Government of Saskatchewan for its commitment to this transformative project," said Mayor Kelli Hawtin.

"Our project is shovel-ready and could begin construction within the next 12 months if our federal funding application is approved. We now respectfully invite the Government of Canada to partner with us with their investment as the final piece needed to bring this project to life for northwest Saskatchewan.

This project supports Government of Canada priorities by strengthening rural communities, building economic resilience, creating skilled trades jobs, supporting local businesses, and investing in infrastructure that brings people together. As a modern regional facility, it will enhance emergency preparedness, support population growth, strengthen local economies, and contribute to a more connected Canada.”

The project has earned strong backing as a long-term asset from leadership and supporters from across the region. That support was evident at the July 27 announcement in North Battleford, where stakeholders gathered in support of the project, including Sweetgrass First Nation Chief Lorie Whitecalf, who highlighted the significance of collaboration as communities across Saskatchewan and Alberta mark the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6.

"When they signed Treaty, this is what they envisioned - working in partnership."

Designed to meet modern performance standards, the facility will incorporate energy-efficient and sustainable building features that improve operational reliability, reduce long-term operating costs, and maximize value for taxpayers. Beyond recreation and entertainment, the centre will serve as a modern, accessible gathering place that supports community connection, regional collaboration, and emergency response when communities need it most. By strengthening essential community infrastructure, the project will help attract and retain families, workers, and investment - supporting the continued growth and resilience of rural Saskatchewan.

Project Outcomes

• Construction of the Regional Arena & Events Centre is expected to generate $58 million in local spending in the Battlefords.
• The project is anticipated to create 200–250 jobs during the 24-month construction period.
• Once complete, the facility is expected to attract approximately 220,000 visitors annually, generating an estimated $13 million–$18 million in regional economic activity each year.
• The project is also expected to support up to 150 additional full-time jobs through ongoing economic spin-offs, including employment in:
  • event coordination
  • technical production, staging, and audio/video services
  • food and beverage services
  • hospitality and accommodations
  • restaurants
  • retail
  • fuel and transportation
  • professional services

Next Steps

With provincial support confirmed, strong regional partnerships in place, and community fundraising well underway, the Battlefords Regional Arena & Events Centre is positioned to proceed once federal funding is approved. Timely approval will allow construction to begin in the 2027 season and ensure this project delivers immediate economic activity while creating lasting benefits for northwest Saskatchewan.

Today’s milestone reflects years of collaboration, persistence, and shared commitment. We invite the federal government to join the Province of Saskatchewan, the City of North Battleford, Indigenous neighbours, municipalities, and regional partners in advancing this shovel-ready project - one that will strengthen communities, support growth, and serve North West Saskatchewan and the Battlefords for generations.
