North Battleford Mayor among delegates advocating for flexible infrastructure funding program in Ottawa this week

With a federal budget due in the coming weeks, municipal and provincial leadership from across Saskatchewan are heading to Ottawa to make their case for a renewed tripartite infrastructure funding program – including City of North Battleford Mayor Kelli Hawtin.

The delegation, led by Saskatchewan Government Relations Minister Eric Schmalz and Minister of Advance Education Ken Cheveldayoff and the leaders of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM), will take part in a number of meetings and presentations with federal government officials in Ottawa on October 1st and 2nd, 2025.

“I am honoured to advocate for some of the significant capital needs of our community and region at the federal level, along with other municipal leadership,” commented Mayor Kelli Hawtin.

“It is important we communicate the need for a flexible, renewed multi-level government infrastructure funding program, with equal financial contributions from the federal and provincial governments to match the investments of municipalities. I am pleased at to work with the Saskatchewan and Canadian governments to strengthen investment in our community. I look forward to sharing the results of our advocacy with Council and the public during an upcoming Council Meeting.”

With a large group of First Nations, Rural Municipalities, communities, and organizations working toward the construction of a regional arena and events centre for the Battlefords, Mayor Hawtin will be among the attendees strongly supporting investment in community recreational facilities. Under the previous Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP), recreational facility projects were eligible. However, the existing ICIP funding stream is currently at capacity for eligible projects and is not accepting new applicants.

In addition to North Battleford, municipal leaders representing Regina, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Swift Current, and Yorkton will be supporting the efforts of the province in Ottawa to highlight the need for expanded municipal infrastructure funding which will better support the unique requirements of different communities.
