Annual water main line flushing begins next week
The City’s Operations Department will start its annual unidirectional water main line flushing on Monday, May 5th. This mandatory process allows operators to confirm the City’s water distribution lines are working properly and helps ensure the quality of the water supply.
This year the unidirectional flushing will be in the following areas: along Pēyak Trail and north to Territorial Drive on the west side of 100th Street; along Railway Avenue and north to 20th Avenue on the east side of 100th Street up to and including 105th Street; the Riverview subdivision, and River Valley Drive. A map is available at this link.
“WATER MAIN FLUSHING” signs will be put out by Operations staff in the areas where flushing will take place that night. Commercial properties are being contacted directly by Operations staff members to address their needs for use of water at night, if applicable. Commercial properties in the affected flushing areas may also reach out to City Hall with questions at 306-445-1700.
For those in a residential area affected by unidirectional line flushing, residents may continue to use water regularly until 7pm. In some cases, water main flushing of a block may take a few nights. In this circumstance, residents may use water as normal between 7am-7pm. The materials flushed out of City water lines during this process are harmless and the process requires no additional treatment for safety. Additional information about the process can be found here.
Follow these tips to protect your home and goods from discoloured water and sediment produced from the flushing process:
- do not use any taps after 7pm
- fill a bathtub or pails/buckets before 7pm for water to manually flush toilets
- set aside water for washing hands, washing dishes, and consumption
- turn off your water or shut off/isolate water appliances such as: water softeners, ice makers, water-cooled utilities, or any other devices that may use water
- before using, run the water from an outside tap for 10 minutes, or until the water runs clear
- restart your water appliances such as water softeners, ice makers, water-cooled utilities and any other devices that were turned off during the flushing process
Use of water in your property while unidirectional flushing is underway can result in stained laundry, plugged filters, and may also damage water heaters. The City is not responsible for any damages caused during this process.
If you use medical equipment requiring continuous water supply, please call City Hall immediately during business hours at 306-445-1700. The process of unidirectional line flushing should be completed within 10-14 days. The City of North Battleford thanks the public in advance for their cooperation.
