2026 Pothole Season
“As the spring season approaches, warmer temperatures are starting to reveal potholes in our streets,” said Stewart Schafer, Director of Operations. “Our Roadways Department’s top priority is keeping our roads safe for both drivers and pedestrians.” As a result, crews are working to fill potholes throughout the coming seasons.
Potholes form when temperatures rise and water seeps into cracks in the road. When the temperatures drop, this water freezes and expands, breaking the pavement bonds that hold the asphalt together. As vehicles drive over the weakened area, the asphalt breaks apart further and a pothole develops. Potholes can often be hidden understanding water or melted snow, creating hazards for drivers and pedestrians.
What drivers should do
- Follow speed limits to give yourself enough time to react.
- Watch out for potholes and try to avoid them if you can.
- Avoid driving through pooled water; as a pothole can be under the water surface, which could result in damage to your vehicle, as well as endanger nearby pedestrians (There is also a $100 fine for splashing pedestrians).
- Obey all traffic barriers—they are there to protect you as well as the road crews.
How to report a pothole
- Submit a service request online.
- Call 306-445-1700.
- Give clear details about the location and size of the pothole to speed up repairs.
The Roadways Department is aware of the most problematic spots, but repairs often must wait until the spring thaw is complete. Filling a wet pothole usually doesn’t work because asphalt won’t bond properly to a wet surface.
