For decades iconic images of Allen Sapp’s paintings have graced the exterior walls of North Battleford’s Capitol Theatre, owned by Magic Lantern Theatres on 100st Street and 11th Avenue. The murals have been an attractive landmark in North Battleford beautifying the downtown while reflecting our community’s history and pride by displaying the art of internationally acclaimed artist Allen Sapp.

The Allen Sapp Gallery – The Gonor Collection and the City of North Battleford are grateful for our community-minded neighbours at the Magic Lantern Theatres – The Capitol Theatre who have supported this project by allowing the murals to be replaced and remain a focal point in our community. Visual art has been a significant feature in Magic Lanterns’ numerous projects across Canada exemplifying their commitment to community, and to their proven belief that artistic projects that tell the local story to enhance and enrich our lives. The new murals complement the efforts of North Battleford’s Business Improvement District in championing a thriving downtown business core through public art and beautification projects.

We extend our gratitude and thanks to Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs – Community Development Corporation, whose financial support made this project possible. BATC- CDC General Manager, Tracy Benson, said that this project was fitting for their program as it “reminds our youth about our humbled beginnings, providing contrast from our Elderly carrying the history from the past to the present, and our youth carrying the history forward to our future.” Senator Jenny Spyglass who assisted in the selection of the images and chose the hockey image stated that “It was important to have playfulness in our lives, especially during these difficult times. We need to have images of kids at play to remind ourselves of the good times.”

These murals are made from digital files printed onto vinyl and it is expected that they will last many years to come and be remembered and enjoyed by the residents of the Battlefords and by tourists to the region.
