The Battlefords River Valley, which stretches along the North Saskatchewan River between the City of North Battleford and Town of Battleford, is a picture perfect place to hike, ski, photograph and just admire the panoramic view. Created by glaciers, the Battlefords River valley is one of the most picturesque landscapes in Saskatchewan – rich in both natural and cultural history.

The Battlefords River Valley features Finlayson Island, King Hill Lookout, Battlefords Wildlife Federation Interpretive Centre and the Battlefords Goose Project.

Finlayson Island

This is a popular hiking and cross country skiing destination in the middle of the North Saskatchewan River. The Island is accessed from our signature arched bridges. Finlayson Island was named in 1964 by the Government of Saskatchewan in honour of Donald (Dan) Matheson Finlayson – an innovative farmer who homesteaded in the Battle River Valley. His homestead was burned during the Rebellion and he served as a Member of Parliament from 1908 until 1934.

King Hill Lookout

The King Hill Lookout provides a 360 degree view of The Battlefords, including the Battlefords River Valley, City and Town. Access to the lookout is from Territorial Drive, west of the Territorial Drive and Highway 4 intersection.

Battlefords Wildlife Federation Interpretive Centre

The Battlefords Wildlife is on the base of King Hill Lookout and offers interpretive wildlife displays.

Battlefords Goose Project

This is a managed wetland which is home to many migratory waterfowl species. Pelicans, ducks and shorebirds can be viewed from your car or take advantage of the observation tower and shore-side path.
